It's
not an amazing story of how we all came together, but a story
nonetheless. It all started with a dream... no... rather, a desperate
idea in the brain of Rickey to gather some of the best musicians he knew
of in order to put together Central Illinois' very own SUPER BAND! Well,
after he awoke all a mess, Rickey still decided to make a few calls to
see what kind of mongrels he could scrounge up.
One of the first people he called was Jerry. Rickey had seen Jerry
playing acoustic shows before and fell in love with his voice. Putting
aside his personal desires for Jerry, he decided he should contact him
about possibly practicing someday. However, he lacked Jerry's phone
number, but he did manage to get his paws on Jerry's girl's number, so
he called. At that unfortunate time, Jerry and his girl were in Chicago
at SoxFest..... um.... celebrating. Needless to say she jumped at the
opportunity to answer her phone, and was surprised the call was for
Jerry. BAM! Jerry was in.
Next, Rickey decided that he wanted to form a FULL band, so he talked
with the bass player that joined his longer living project, Tru-Dat.
Knowing that Bowlee is the slap-happy funkmaster from hell, Rickey knew
right away that he needed to look no further. Bowlee, just breaking into
the public scene with his talents, happily accepted the offer. BAM!
Bowlee was in.
Now Rickey had played with a young lead guitarist for Tru-Dat before,
but no longer. His name was Nate Keiser, but everybody always called him
Kooz. Nate was good, and Rickey knew he was only getting better, so he
figured now he be great. But he found it difficult to believe that the
little bastard had lost his smart mouth, and Rickey didn't think that
the band could work with such a person. However, his strong-will
empowered him to call Kooz anyway, despite the foreboding omen of
accidentally kicking a black cat under a ladder into a breaking mirror
while taking the Lord's name in vain. Kooz, aching to end his call
center job, was excited to learn that he could finally be his own boss,
so he lapped up the opportunity the boss around the band. BAM! Kooz was
in.
Finally, it was time to hold auditions for a drummer. And boy was that a
treat! All sorts of characters wandered their way looking to expose
themselves... musically. The band even had decided on a guy, but within
two weeks, they knew it wasn't going to work. Cornered and clueless as
to what to do, Kooz comes through with a man he had jammed with before.
A man so versatile and dynamic that he could parallel Carter Beuford.
This man had played with many greats, including Sammy Davis Jr and Bo
Didley. He was named Joe Beck, and he was EXACTLY what they needed. BAM!
Joe was in.
Now, how did we come up with "Up 4 Grabs," might you ask? Well, not very
sexy, really. We tossed around lots of names, from "Happy Hour Heroes"
to "Strapless" to "Ritalin for Dogs," but none of them (obviously) fit
the bill. So in a pit of frustration, Jerry exclaimed, "Screw it, guys!
I don't care. Any of them are up for grabs!" Immediately the guys looked
at each other and agreed. That name, "Up 4 Grabs"..... was not bad...
